Nitrous Oxide
Commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation we use and is extremely safe for children of all ages. This approach relieves anxiety, reduces gag reflex, and can be used for almost all restorative procedures.
It not only has a calming effect, but nitrous oxide is also well-known for its analgesic (pain-relieving) properties, making it the perfect solution for children who are a bit too nervous to sit through a dental procedure without some help.
The gas is mixed with oxygen and administered nasally. We always start nitrous before beginning the procedure so the patient can remain calm and relaxed. The timing is important: if we wait until the patient becomes upset, he or she will be too stressed to breathe through the nose, and the effect of the nitrous oxide will be diminished.
Some degree of cooperation is required for nitrous use to be successful. If a child has extreme anxiety or needs extensive treatment, this may not be the best way to go.
